Dental Inlays and Onlays for Damaged Teeth

Dental inlays and onlays give you an alternative when tooth damage is too extensive for a traditional filling. An inlay fits within your tooth’s cusps, while an onlay extends over one or more cusps to repair more extensive damage. Both are bonded with high-strength resin to strengthen your tooth.

01.

Process

  • Prepare your tooth. Your damaged or decayed tooth structure, or the filling being replaced, is removed to prepare your tooth.
  • Create your impression. An impression is taken to ensure your restoration provides the proper fit and bite.
  • Protect your tooth. A temporary sealant protects your prepared tooth while a lab fabricates your custom inlay or onlay.
  • Check your restoration. At your second appointment, your temporary sealant is removed, and your restoration is checked for proper fit.
  • Complete your treatment. Your inlay or onlay is bonded with strong resin and polished to a smooth finish.

02.

Next Steps

  • Expect temporary sensitivity. Your tooth may be more sensitive to hot or cold for a few days, but this should decrease with time.
  • Practice good oral hygiene. Brush twice a day and floss daily to protect your oral health.
  • Schedule regular checkups. Your dentist will check your restoration during your regular dental visits.
